2015 American Music Awards Nominees Include the Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, Sam Smith

The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj and Sam Smith are just some of the artists who picked up multiple nominations for the 2015 American Music Awards.
The awards show nominees were revealed Tuesday morning (Oct. 13), with the Beauty Behind the Madness creator coming in right behind Taylor Swift with five nods. Abel Tesfaye’s nominations include Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year, Favorite Male Artist in the R&B/soul category, Song of the Year for “Can’t Feel My Face” and Album of the Year for his new LP, Beauty Behind the Madness.
Meanwhile, Sam and Nicki follow with four each including both competing in the Artist of the Year category. Nicki will also go toe-to-toe with Drake and Fetty Wap for the Favorite Hip-Hop/Rap category. Rihanna, Mary J. Blige and Beyonce are vying for Favorite Female R&B/Soul Artist.
This year’s must-see hip-hopera Empire also gains a nomination in the Top Soundtrack category and will battle against Pitch Perfect 2 and Fifty Shades of Grey.
The 2015 American Music Awards will air from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Nov. 22 on ABC. Jennifer Lopez is set to be the night’s host and will also perform.

Haile Gebrselassie tops our readers’ poll to decide the ultimate men’s distance runner

You voted in your masses for the greatest men’s distance runner in history and the results produced an overwhelming victory for Haile Gebrselassie, with Emil Zatopek finishing runner-up and Kenenisa Bekele third, just ahead of Mo Farah.

In Athletics Weekly recently we re-opened the debate of who the greatest men’s distance runner in history is. On the cover and over 10 pages inside the magazine we whittled giant list of contenders into a magnificent seven shortlist of Paavo Nurmi, Zatopek, Abebe Bikila, Lasse Viren, Gebrselassie, Bekele and Farah – and you voted in your hundreds.

Of course Farah hasn’t finished his career yet and perhaps might rise further if he wins more Olympic titles next year in Rio or makes an impact on the roads of the marathon at some stage.

For now, though, there is no doubt Gebrselassie is your choice as the best distance runner in history. Not only does he have two Olympic 10,000m titles and four world 10,000m golds, but he smashed 27 world records, including in the marathon, and his range was so remarkable he even once won the world indoor 1500m title.

Add to this his amazing durability and the ‘x factor’ that made him the most charismatic athlete of his generation and is it easy to see why he took most of your votes.

Polls like this are always subjective, though, and it is worth pointing out that athletes who primarily raced over 800-1500m were not considered, while in addition we are planning to do a similar feature on women’s distance runners in a forthcoming issue.

Ten Eritrean soccer players seeking asylum in Botswana should be deported, Botswana’s security minister said on Thursday, a decision their lawyer said he would challenge in court.

The Eritreans refused to board their plane home on Wednesday, the latest in a series of defections by athletes from a country under investigation by the United Nations for human-rights violations.

“The issue is simple: they must go back to their country. You don’t come here to play football, lose, then say you want political asylum. There are proper steps that should be followed if you want to be a refugee,” Defense and Security Minister Shaw Kgathi told GabzFM, a local private radio station.

Eritrean officials could not be reached for comment.

Dick Bayford, a lawyer representing the players, told Reuters he would file an urgent court application on Friday to prevent the government from deporting them.

The players are being kept at a police station in Botswana’s second city of Francistown, where they played a match on Tuesday.

The Eritrean national team was in Botswana to play a World Cup qualifying match. Botswana won the game 3-1.

ይህ ተግባር ከዚህ በፊት እንደታየው ሁሉ አቃቤ ህግ ለይግባኝ ጊዜ አንዲገዛ ከማረሚያ ቤቱ የሚደረግለት የጓሮ ትብብር አንዳይሆን እጅግ ከፍተኛ ስጋት አለን፡፡ ከዚህም በተጨማሪ የተለመደው የፍርድ ቤቶችን ስልጣን ዝቅ አድጎ የማየት እና የማረሚያ ቤቶች የእጅ አዙር ፍርድ ሰጪነት ማሳያም ነው ፡፡ በመሆኑም ከዚህ በፊት አንደታየው በአደባባይ በሕግ አግባብ የተሰጠን ነጻነት በጓሮ ከሕግ ውጪ ሊነጠቅ የሚችልበት ከፍተኛ ስጋት አሁንም የዞን9 ጦማርያን ፊት ተጋርጧል ፡፡

ክሷ በሌለችበት ሲታይ የነበረው 1ኛ ተከሳሽ ሶሊያና ሽመልስ በሌለችበት በነፃ ተሰናብታለች፡፡ ጦማርያኑ በነፃ የተሰናበቱት፣ “የዐቃቤ ሕግ ማስረጃዎች የቀረበውን ክስ በሚገባ አላስረዱም” በሚል ፍ/ቤቱ በሰጠው ውሳኔ ሲሆን አራቱም መከላከል ሳያስፈልጋቸው በነፃ እንዲሰናበቱ በይኗል፡፡
ከአንድ ዓመት ከአምስት ወራት በፊት በድንገት ተይዘው ከታሰሩት 10 ጋዜጠኞችና ጦማርያን ውስጥ አምስቱ ሐምሌ 1 እና 2፣ 2007 ዓ.ም በድንገት መፈታታቸው ይታወሳል፡፡
በትላንትናው እለት በነፃ ከተባሉት ናትናኤል ፈለቀ፣ አቤል ዋበላ፣ አጥናፉ ብርሃኔ ፍርድ ቤቱ ነፃ ቢላቸውም ማረምያ ቤቱ ሳይፈታቸው የቀረ ቢሆንም ዛሬ ተፈተዋል።

ETHIOPIAN WAR CRIMINAL CAUGHT IN AMSTELVEEN

A 61 year old man was arrested in Amstelveen on suspicion of committing war crimes in Ethiopia in the late 70’s as a representative of the former Derg regime. According to the Public Prosecutor, the man is accused of the imprisonment, torture and murder of opponents of the former regime. The man has been living in the Netherlands for some time and has received Dutch nationality.

In 1974 Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie was deposed by a group of soldiers from the Derg. After an internal power struggle Colonel Mengistu seized power. Under the Mengistu regime Ethiopia suffered a period of repression and conflict that cost the lives of many thousands of people. The reign of terror was accompanied by widespread arrests, torture and killings committed by the government.

In the 90’s international media reported about the possible involvement of this suspect in crimes against Ethiopians. In Ethiopia the man received sentences, in absentia, of life in prison and death for the murder of alleged opponents of the regime.

For the Dutch criminal investigation against this man, the police have questioned a number of witnesses, mostly Ethiopians now living abroad. According to the Prosecutor, these witnesses have made statements about crimes this man allegedly committed in the Gojjam province as a representative of the military dictatorship. The Dutch investigative authorities also received part of the criminal file that led to the suspect’s death sentence from the Ethiopian authorities. The investigation by the International Crimes Team is focusing on specific, individual cases of imprisonment, torture and murder in the prison camps of Debre Marcos and Metekel. According to the Prosecutor, dozens of prisoners were murdered and their bodies dumped in a mass grave in 1978 on the orders of the suspect.

The man was arrested on September 29th and has been in custody since then. During the search of his home the police found and confiscated, among other things, military and other identity documents, including two diplomatic passports. On Thursday the court in The Hague remanded the man into custody for 90 days.

Court stops Botswana from deporting Eritrean soccer players

A court has stopped Botswana from deporting a group of 10 Eritrean soccer players that sought asylum after playing in this week’s World Cup qualifier.

The court ruled late on Friday the players could stay while they have their cases heard under the southern African country’s asylum law.

The Eritreans refused to board their plane home on Wednesday after playing the match against Botswana, the latest in a series of defections by athletes from a country under investigation by the United Nations for human-rights violations.

The players are being kept at a detention center for illegal immigrants in Botswana’s second city of Francistown, where they played the match on Tuesday. Their asylum case is expected be heard on December 11.

“The decision shows that the rule of law in Botswana is on solid ground and we are happy to be beneficiaries of it,” Abane Ghebremestel of Eritrean Movement for Democracy and Human Rights in Pretoria, said.

Similar mass defections by Eritrean soccer players occurred in Kenya in 2009, Tanzania in 2011 and Uganda in 2012. They were fleeing a country where slavery-like practices are routine and torture widespread, the United Nations said after a year-long investigation.

The U.N. investigation also found that Eritrea subjected its citizens to indefinite national service and killed people who try to flee the country. The Eritrean Foreign Ministry dismissed the report without addressing specific allegations
