he newly appointed Egyptian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ambassador Aboubakr Hefny presented copies of his credentials to State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Berhane Gebre-Christos on Thursday (September 16).

The State Minister noted the long and historic economic, political and religious ties between Ethiopia and Egypt, inter-linked above all by the River Nile. He emphasized that Ethiopia was building the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam as part of its efforts to lift the population out of poverty and stressed that Ethiopia was determined to develop and prosper together with its brothers and sisters in the downstream countries of Sudan and Egypt.

Ambassador Berhane pointed out that any fears concerning the GERD among either the countries or their peoples were unfounded. Indeed, the governments of both Ethiopia and Egypt were working closely together and were firmly committed to avoid unnecessary concerns. He underlined that enhancing cooperation in the areas of trade, investment and people-to-people relations were very important in building the trust and confidence which would benefit the people of both countries.

Ambassador Aboubakr Hefny said that beyond the question of the Nile River, Ethiopia and Egypt could work and cooperate in areas of commerce, industry, agriculture, cultural heritage management, education and engineering. He agreed that enhancing economic co-operation was crucial to the benefit of the people of both counties, and noted that there had been a recent upsurge in the numbers of Egyptian investors coming to Ethiopia. There was serious interest in establishing an Egyptian Industry Park in Ethiopia.

The State Minister assured Ambassador Aboubakr Hefny that the Ethiopian government would provide all the necessary support for his efforts and wished him a fruitful stay in Ethiopia.

The novelist Jackie Collins has died of breast cancer at the age of 77, her family said in a statement.
“It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the death of our beautiful, dynamic and one-of-a-kind mother,” the statement said.
The British-born writer, sister of actress Joan Collins, died in Los Angeles, her spokeswoman said.

She told the magazine in her last interview on 14 September that she had told few people about her diagnosis other than her three daughters, and did not regret her decision.

Collins said that she “never felt bashful writing about sex”. “I think I’ve helped people’s sex lives,” she said.
“Sex is a driving force in the world so I don’t think it’s unusual that I write about sex. I try to make it erotic, too.”

በምስሉ ላይ የምትመለከቱትን ዘገባ ደግሞ እዩት!! “የአረፋ በዓል ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ ብሄራዊ በዓል ሆኖ ተከበረ” ይላል፡፡ ይህም በ1967 የተፈጸመ ክስተት ነው፡፡ ከዚያ በፊት የፓርላማ አባል የሆኑ ጥቂት ባላባቶች፣ የሸሪዓ ፍርድ ቤት ዳኞች፣ አንዳንድ ታዋቂ ነጋዴዎች እና ጥቂት የሃይማኖት መሪዎች ወደ ቤተ መንግሥት እየተጠሩ ጋብዣ ቢጤ ይደረግላቸውና በማግስቱ “በኢትዮጵያ የሚኖሩ እስላሞች በዓላቸውን አከበሩ” እየተባለ በአዲስ ዘመን እና በዛሬይቱ ኢትዮጵያ ጋዜጣ ይጻፋል፡፡ በኢትዮጵያ የሚኖሩ እስላሞች!! ለአንድ ሺህ አራት መቶ ዓመታት እዚሁ የነበሩት ሙስሊሞች በአጼዎቹ ዘመን “በኢትዮጵያ የሚኖሩ እስላሞች” እየተባሉ ነበር የሚጠሩት፡፡ እስልምናም ሆነ ክርስትና ወደ ኢትዮጵያ የገቡት ከሌላ ሀገር ነው፡፡ አጼዎቹ ግን አንዱን መጤ አንዱን የሀገሩ ዜጋ ይሉት ነበረ፡፡ ሀገሪቱም የአንዱ ብቻ እንደሆነች ነው በአዋጅ ያሰፈሩት፡፡ በትምህርት ገበታም ይህንኑ ነበር የሚያስተምሩት፡፡
ደርግ ግን የአጼዎቹን ድንቁርና በመሻር ሙስሊሞቹን “ኢትዮጵያዊያን ሙስሊሞች” በማለት መጥራት ጀመረ፡፡ በዚህም ሳይገደብ የኢድ-አልፈጥር፣ አረፋ እና መውሊድ በዓላት ብሄራዊ በዓል ሆነው እንዲከበሩ ውሳኔ አስተላለፈ፡፡ በዚህም መሰረት ደርግ መስከረም 1967 ስልጣን ከያዘ በኋላ ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ በብሄራዊ ደረጃ የመከበር እድል ያገኘው የአረፋ በዓል ነው፡፡ ይህ የአዲስ ዘመን ጋዜጣ እትም በዓሉ በተከበረበት ማግስት የወጣ ነው፡፡

የአጼዎቹን ዘመን እከን የለሽ የብልጽግና፣ የእኩልነት እና የኩሩ ኢትዮጵያዊነት ተምሳሌት አድርገው የሚነዘንዙን ሰዎች ይህንን ታሪክ አያውቁትም አይባልም፡፡ ነገር ግን ሐቅን ላለማየት የወሰኑ አውቆ አበዶች በመሆናቸው ከእብደታቸው ጋር ልንተዋቸው እንገደዳለን፡፡ (በበኩሌ ከእንደነዚህ ዓይነቶቹ ጋር የውይይት አጀንዳ አልከፍትም)፡፡
የአሁኑ መንግሥት ደግሞ ይገርማል፡፡ በስልጣኑ የመጀመሪያ ዓመታት ጥሩ የሚባሉ ጅምሮችን አሳይቶን ለዘመናት የነበርንበት የመቻቻልና የመተሳሳብ ባህላችን የበለጠ እንዲጠናከር ከሚደረግበት ደረጃ ላይ ልንደርስ ነው አስብሎን ነበር፡፡ እያደር ግን እውቅና የሰጣቸውን ህዝባዊ መብቶች መገደብ ጀመረ፡፡
ለምሳሌ ሙስሊም ሴት ተማሪዎችና ሰራተኞች በትምህርት ቤትና በስራ መስክ ላይ ሆነው “ሂጃብ” መልበስ እንዲችሉ የፈቀደው የአሁኑ መንግሥት ነው፡፡ ከቅርብ ጊዜ ወዲህ ግን የመንግሥት ባለስልጣናት ይህንን መብት ለማገድ እንቅስቃሴ መጀመራቸውን እየሰማን ነው፡፡ ይህ የሂጃብ ጉዳይ ደግሞ ጠ/ሚ/ር መለስ ዜናዊ “የታገልንለት መብት ስለሆነ ማንም ሊያግደው አይችልም” ያሉለት መሆኑን ልብ በሉ፡፡
በሌላ በኩል የኢትዮጵያ እስልምና ጉዳዮች ከፍተኛ ጉባኤ እንዲመሰረት የፈቀደው ደርግ ነው፡፡ በደርግ ዘመን የጉባኤው እንቅስቃሴዎች ውስን እንደነበሩ ማንም አያስተባብልም፡፡ ኢህአዴግ ሲመጣ ደግሞ “ጉባኤ” የሚለው እና ተቋሙ የራሱ ስልጣን ያለው መሆኑን የሚያስረዳው ስያሜው ተቀይሮ “የእስልምና ጉዳዮች ከፍተኛ ምክር ቤት” የሚል ግራ የተጋባ አጠራር መጣ፡፡ “ጉባኤ” ሲባል እላይ ካልኩት በተጨማሪ ተቋሙ የሁሉም ኢትዮጵያዊያን ሙስሊሞች ንብረት መሆኑን ነው የሚገልጸው፡፡ “ምክር ቤት” ሲባል ግን አንዳንዶች በውክልና የሰየሙት ተቋም ዓይነት እንደሆነ የሚያሳይ ነው፡፡
ታዲያ ምክር ቤቱ በአሰራሩም ነው የተለወጠው፡፡ በደርግ ዘመን የነበረው የእስልምና ጉባኤ ህልውናውን ለማንም አስደፍሮ አያውቅም፡፡ ደርግ ለጉባኤው “ይህንን ስራ፤ ይህንን ተው” የሚል ትዕዛዝ ሰጥቶት አያውቅም፡፡ በዘመናችን ግን ጽንፈኝነትና አሸባሪነትን በመዋጋት ስም የብዙዎችን ልብ ያደሙ በርካታ እርምጃዎች ተወስደዋል፡፡ እነዚህን እርምጃዎች በበላይነት ያስፈጽም የነበረው የፌዴራል ጉዳዮች ሚኒስቴር የሚባለው ተቋም መሆኑ ደግሞ በግልጽ ይታወቃል፡፡ ህዝበ ሙስሊሙ እንዲህ ዓይነቱ አካሄድ ትክክል እንዳልሆነ ለመንግሥትና ለሌሎች አካላት እንዲያስረዱለት የወከላቸው የሃይማኖት አባቶችና መምህሮች በጅምላ ታስረውበታል፡፡
እና ምን እንበል? “ጨፍጫፊ” እየተባለ የሚወገዘው ደርግ እንኳ ያላደረገው ነገር በኢህአዴግ ዘመን ሲፈጸም አባላቱና ደጋፊዎቹ ለምን ዝም ይላሉ?….. ይህ ጉዳይ የሁላችንም ጉዳይ ነው፡፡ የወደፊቷ ኢትዮጵያ የተጣመመውን እያስተካከሉ፣ የጎደለውን እያሟሉ መጓዝን ነው የምትፈልገው፡፡ ስለዚህ የኢትዮጵያ መንግሥት ከህዝበ ሙስሊሙ የተነሱትን ቀላል ጥያቄዎች እንዲመልስና በንትርኩ ሳቢያ የታሰሩብንን ንጹሐን ዜጎች እንዲለቅልን አሁንም በድጋሚ እንጠይቀዋለን፡፡

Pope Francis met with former Cuban leader Fidel Castro in Cuba today after this morning’s Mass, and then delivered a sermon in which he praised the “spirit of poverty” and warned against wealth.

At a vespers celebration with priests, nuns, and seminarians gathered at Havana Cathedral, the pope went off his prepared text and spoke spontaneously, warning against letting riches rule your life and calling poverty “the wall and the mother of consecrated life.”

“The mother, because it created more trust in god, and the wall because it protected it from worldliness,” Francis said. “How many souls, like the one of the sad young man, who started off well, but who then became worldly, and ended mediocre, without love, because richness impoverishes. It makes us poor in the only wealth that is worth having, to put our safety in other things. The spirit of poverty, of letting go of everything to follow Jesus. This is in the Gospel several times. The first ones left the boats, and the nets, and followed him. They left it all to follow Jesus.”
Later, he encouraged a group of youth at the Centro Cultural Padre Felix Varela to “dream big.”

“Open yourself, dream big, don’t strike yourself,” he said. “Open yourself, and dream. Dream that the world with you, can be different. Dream that if you give the best of yourself, you’ll help make the world a different place. Don’t forget. Dream. Sometimes you dream too much and life cuts your path. It doesn’t matter, dream, and share your dream, make it big, because bigger the ability to dream, even if life leaves you half way to it, you would have walked a longer path.”

In his meeting with the former Cuban leader, Francis gave Castro several books, as well as a book and two CDs of homilies and a copy of his two encyclicals.

In return, Castro gave Francis an interview book entitled, “Fidel and Religion,” written in 1985 by Freitas Betto. Fidel wrote a dedication in it: “For Pope Francis, on occasion of his visit to Cuba, with the admiration and respect of the Cuban people.”

The atmosphere was “familiar and informal,” Father Lombardi said, and the conversation centered around “protecting the environment and the great problems of the contemporary world.”
Francis began a busy day in Cuba by holding Mass this morning in Havana’s Revolution Square.

When Francis drove by in his open-sided Peugeot popemobile, the crowds sang and waved Cuban, Vatican and Argentine flags.

As he headed towards the square, he passed by two men and a woman who tried to seize the moment. They approached with leaflets, threw them toward the pontiff and were instantly pounced on by security guards. Once the three were detained, the guards picked up the fliers.
Francis then began Mass, which was attended by 300,000, according to the Cuban government.

“God’s holy and faithful people in Cuba is a people with a taste for parties, for friendship, for beautiful things,” Francis said. “It is a people which marches with songs of praise. It is a people which has its wounds, like every other people, yet knows how to stand up with open arms, to keep walking in hope, because it has a vocation of grandeur.”
“Today I ask you to care for this vocation of yours, to care for these gifts which God has given you, but above all I invite you to care for and be at the service of the frailty of your brothers and sisters. Do not neglect them for plans which can be seductive, but are unconcerned about the face of the person beside you. We know, we are witnesses of the incomparable power of the resurrection, which everywhere calls forth the seeds of a new world.”

Francis also gave several children their first communion.Francis’ day continued with a formal meeting with Cuban President Raul Castro.

Raul Castro gave the pontiff a large crucifix made by a Cuban artist. The pope gave the president a painting of the patron saint of Cuba, La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre. The pope will visit the shrine where the statue of the La Virgen is kept Monday evening.

After his first meeting with Fidel Castro, the pope then went to back to the Nunciature, and then with a small group, he went to Fidel Castro’s home for another meeting. Castro’s wife was also there with his children and grandchildren. They were together for about 30 to 40 minutes.

Francis began his 10-day trip to Cuba and the U.S. Saturday, addressing the crowd at Jose Marti International Airport upon his arrival and hailing the two countries for reestablishing diplomatic relations following a long period of estrangement

Hamza Bendelladj will be sentenced after allegedly stealing from US banks and giving to Palestinian charities.
Depending on who you ask, Hamza Bendelladj is either a Robin Hood-esque hero or a cyber-age hoodlum.

The 27-year-old Algerian computer science graduate will be sentenced on Tuesday in a US court for using a computer virus to steal money from more than 200 American banks and financial institutions. He then reportedly gave millions of dollars to Palestinian charities.

Bendelladj, who is alleged to be the co-creator of a banking trojan horse called SpyEye, was indicted in absentia by US authorities in 2011. The programme – a malware toolkit that saw its popularity peak between 2009 and 2011 – is believed to have infected more than 1.4 million computers in the US and elsewhere, according to Wired, a San Francisco-based technology magazine. The software enabled users to steal login information for online financial accounts, which they then pillaged.

On Tuesday, Bendelladj, who hails from Tizi Ouzou in Algeria, will be sentenced in court in the US state of Georgia. He has already pleaded guilty and faces a prison sentence of more than 65 years and up to $14m in fines, according to the US Department of Justice
It took two years for Bendelladj, known in the online world as Bx1, to be apprehended. Authorities in Thailand arrested him on their soil and extradited him to the US in 2013. He was dubbed the “happy hacker” because he was photographed smiling as he was taken into custody at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport.

American law enforcement officers identified Bendelladj when he allegedly sold a copy of the SpyEye virus to an undercover officer for $8,500.

“Bendelladj’s alleged criminal reach extended across international borders, directly into victims’ homes,” said US attorney Sally Quillian Yates, on May 3, 2013, on the same day Bendelladj’s 23-count indictment was revealed. It included charges related to wire, bank, and computer fraud.
“In a cyber-netherworld, he allegedly commercialised the wholesale theft of financial and personal information through this virus, which he sold to other cyber-criminals,” Yates said.

According to court documents, between 2009 and 2011, Bendelladj and others developed, marketed and sold various versions of the SpyEye virus to cyber-criminals, which allowed them to obtain passwords, usernames and credit card information. US authorities say he mostly advertised SpyEye on a computer hacking forum known as Darkode.

US authorities say Bendelladj and other SpyEye users were responsible for buildinga huge network, or “botnet”, of infected computers that they regularly hijacked for financial and personal information. Bendelladj is also accused of using the information gathered to steal money from banks.

While the court documents make no references as to how the cash was spent, several reports online claimed that Bendelladj used the money to fund various Palestinian charities – information that made him a hero in the eyes of many.

Following his extradition, rumours began to circulate online that Bendelladj was facing the death penalty for his crimes, and his supporters began a campaign asking for his life to be spared. In August, a user writing under the Twitter handle @Hassan_JBr wrote: “Algerian hero is 1/10 most dangerous hackers. Hacked 217 banks, sent $280,000,000 to Palestine. His sentence? death.” His message garnered more than 4,500 re-tweets.

US authorities refuted the widely publicised claims; even the US ambassador to Algeria, Joan Polaschik, tweeted in French that “computer crimes are not capital [ones] and are not punishable by the death penalty”.

Since Bendellaj’s incarceration, US law enforcement officers said they have dismantled Darkode and have filed criminal charges against a dozen individuals associated with the forum.

“This is a milestone in our efforts to shut down criminals’ ability to buy, sell, and trade malware, botnets, and personally identifiable information used to steal from US citizens and individuals around the world,” said FBI Deputy Director Mark Giuliano.

Despite his admission of guilt, Bendellaj’s supporters continue to hack various websites across the world, including, of late, Air France and a Virginia-based university, calling for his release using the hashtags #FreeHamzaBendellaj and #FreePalestine.

According to Martin Libicki, the author of Cyberdeterrence and Cyberwar, the fight against online hackers such as Bendelladj will be a long one.

“Cybercrime is still an attractive proposition for someone who is clever and has a tolerance for [ignoring] risk,” he told Al Jazeera. “In the long run, bringing the losses to cybercrime down to tolerable levels will have to depend on provisions that are made in the architecture of computing and the architecture of banking [and other money-handling industries].”
