Dec 21, 2015 – The Eritrean patriarch Abuna Dioskoros (ድዮስቖሮስ) died today. Abune Dioskoros, born 1935, was the fourth #Patriarch of the Eritrean #Orthodox #Tewahedo #Church, and appointed in April 2007.
The late Abuna Dioskoros (pictured above) was chosen to lead the Church after the regime in Eritrea changed the church’s rules for the appointment.
The removal of the Abune Antonios, the former legal Patriarch, at the behest of the Eritrean government was denounced by Pope Shenouda III of all African #Coptic Orthodox Churches and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church who have refused to recognize Abune Dioskoros as legitimate Patriarch of Eritrea (even though Ethiopian government has done the same rule bending to replace its patriarch). So do some Eritrean churches in the diaspora and still continue to endorse the late Abune’s predecessor.
The former Patriarch Abune Antonios born 1927, who was removed from the post after having criticized the Eritrean government for interference in Church affairs, is under house arrest by the regime in Eritrea since 2005.
LATEST: Holy Synod of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church announces that the funeral services of the late Patriarch Abuna Dioskoros will be at Abune Abranios Monastery, Mendefera sub-zone, at noon on Saturday 26 December following prayer sermons at Asmara’s Saint Mary Church earlier in the day.
