A remotely-controlled bomb struck a military convoy carrying Ethiopian soldiers serving with the African Union mission (AMISOM) in southern Somalia, Shabelle News quoted a villager as saying on Monday.
A resident who wished to remain anonymous, told Radio Shabelle that a vehicle was burnt in the roadside explosion that ripped through the Ethiopian army convoy near Leego town.
After the IED explosion, heavy gunfire erupted in the area between Al Shabaab fighters and AMISOM soldiers, according to the local resident. No casualties reported yet.
AMISOM and Al Shabaab did not comment on the attack, the report said.
The Ethiopian government has recently sent an additional one thousand troops
, on top of the over four thousand troops deployed with AMISOM, on a separate mission to fight Al Shabaab. Officials say the troops are fighting to flush Al Shabaab out of the areas currently under its control.
