Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba broke the women’s indoor mile world record as she ran 4:13.32 for the win at the Globen Galan meeting in Stockholm.
The previous world record was set in 1990 by Romania’s Doina Melinte in 4:17.14.
In her last two appearances at the meet, Dibaba set world records in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meter in 8:26.21 and 14:18.86, respectively.
Last year, Dibaba, 25, earned the International Athletics Federation’s Athlete of the Year honors after setting the world record in the 1,500-meters in 3:50.07.
Dibaba says that she expects to double in the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters at the IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships in March. She will make her final decision with her coach in the coming days.
Dibaba is an early favorite to win gold in the 1,500 meters at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after winning the event at last year’s world championships.
In Stockholm, Ayanleh Souleiman of Djibouti ran a world record for the men’s 1,000 meters in 2:14.20.
